About the event

In the first half of March, the 12th, professor and jurist Marco Antonio Marques da Silva — who is a retired judge from the Court of Justice of São Paulo (TJ-SP) and current coordinator of the Data Protection and Digital Law Course at the Pontifical University Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) — participated in the “Brazil/Portugal Event on cybersecurity and Space Law”, promoted by the Escola Paulista da Magistratura (EPM).

On the occasion — which had the support of PUC-SP, also the Cyberspace Legal Research Center (CIJIC) of the University of Lisbon, and the International Academy of Space Studies (IASS) — Marco Antonio Marques da Silva highlighted the change of paradigms in which refers to the way of seeing the world,as well as protecting yourself in matters related to cybersecurity. He highlighted that, in this field, the victims are generally states and corporations.

The retired TJ-SP judge also spoke about the Cybersecurity Regulation — which was created by the European Union (EU) in 2019 — and the legislation and measures adopted by EU countries to combat cyberattacks.

Another point addressed by professor Marco Antonio Marques da Silva was the growth of cybercrime and the economic impact it generates. The lawyer also mentioned the European Commission's strategies and proposals to strengthen cybersecurity. Among these strategies are, for example:

  • An action plan for coordinated responses to large-scale cyberattacks;
  • A more effective response from Criminal Law and international cooperation;
  • Discussions to adopt a single digital market.
